Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated Fossil Resource Assistant to support the paleontological resource management program within the National Forest Service, specifically focusing on the Umatilla National Forest, with administrative base in Pasco, WA. This role involves assisting with the inventory, monitoring, protection, and interpretation of fossil resources on federal lands. The successful candidate will contribute to fieldwork, data management, and public outreach, playing a crucial role in preserving invaluable scientific and historical specimens for future generations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct field surveys to locate, document, and assess fossil occurrences in compliance with agency protocols.
  • Assist in the excavation and recovery of paleontological specimens under the supervision of qualified paleontologists.
  • Maintain detailed records, including GPS coordinates, photographs, field notes, and site forms.
  • Process and curate fossil collections, including cleaning, labeling, and organizing specimens for long-term storage.
  • Support the development and delivery of public education and interpretive programs related to paleontology.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment, vehicles, and tools safely and effectively.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including archaeologists, botanists, and wildlife biologists.
  • Assist with report writing and data entry for resource management plans and compliance documents.

Required Skills

  • Basic knowledge of geology and paleontology principles.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in various outdoor conditions, including rough terrain and inclement weather.
  • Proficiency in using GPS devices and basic mapping tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills for data recording and specimen curation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid state driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Paleontology, Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related natural science field.
  • Previous experience with federal land management agencies (e.g., USFS, BLM, NPS).
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS or other GIS software.
  • Experience with fossil preparation and curation techniques.
