Job Description
Are you passionate about dinosaurs, ancient life, and sharing knowledge with others? The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites is seeking enthusiastic and knowledgeable individuals to join our team as a Part-time Science Museum Docent specializing in Paleontology. In this flexible role, you will bring the prehistoric world to life for our visitors, guiding them through our fossil exhibits and sharing fascinating insights into ancient ecosystems. This is a unique opportunity to educate, inspire, and foster a love for science and natural history in our community.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead engaging and interactive tours of the paleontology exhibits for diverse groups, including school children, families, and adults.
- Interpret complex scientific concepts related to fossils, evolution, geology, and ancient environments in an accessible and exciting manner.
- Answer visitor questions accurately and courteously, providing additional context and information as needed.
- Facilitate hands-on activities and demonstrations related to paleontology.
- Ensure the safety and enjoyment of all visitors in assigned exhibit areas.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current paleontological research and museum exhibit content.
- Assist with special events and educational programs as required.
- Uphold the museum's commitment to exceptional visitor service and education.
Required Skills
- Strong passion for paleontology, geology, and natural sciences.
- Excellent verbal communication and public speaking skills.
- Ability to engage and connect with diverse audiences, especially children.
- Enthusiastic and outgoing personality.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings.
- Basic computer literacy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Biology, Education, or a related field.
- Previous experience in museum education, public speaking, teaching, or informal science education.
- Familiarity with the specific fossil record and geological history of Indiana.
- Bilingual abilities are a plus.
